what i've written recently: late period 2023
i am a girl sitting at a computer typing some words
i write a lot which means a lot of things tend to slip through the cracks in terms of sharing. i am so bad at doing substack round-ups or regular updates but i should do better, so this is me doing better!
also PS in case you missed it, i got suspended from twitter. my new account is @FakeNadine if you would like to give me a follow! still trying to track down some old mutuals…
here are some things published recently by me:
In case you missed it, I’m now started contributing to The Fader’s rap column every other week. I’ve been extremely proud of the work I’ve done so far, which I think spans a very diverse range of music, and my co-columnist Vivian Medithi has been bringing some stellar analysis as well. So far I’ve written about:
The explosive and experimental new waves of Brazilian baile funk
How Jelly Roll and trap beats took over the country music establishment
How Drake used remixes for other artists to extend his empire
How investment firms have transformed the business of sampling
The DJ Envy real estate investment scandal and the dark side of rap’s hustle mindset
I’ve also been covering new singles by artists like RealYungPhil, Bktherula, Icewear Vezzo & YTB Fatt, DJ Dayeh, & DCG Brothers.
I crossed one off my bucket list by *finally* getting to do a Sunday Review for Pitchfork, and I could not have asked for a more fitting subject than Lyle Lovett’s Pontiac, one of the enduring albums of my life. Shout out to my dad.
For Texas Monthly, I remembered the life of Terry Funk, RIP to an icon. Still surreal I get to write for Texas Monthly…
I examined the sped-up remix trend and the queer potential of pitch-shifted music.
For The Ringer, I spoke to a literal icon of women’s wrestling, Madusa, about her new memoir, working in Japan, and monster trucks. A true honor getting to chat with her.
I reviewed Drake’s latest album, which caused a minor stir because it was one of the first reviews posted online and hyperlinked to on Wikipedia.
I interviewed the director of the recent lucha libre movie Cassandro. I’m pretty sure I’m the only critic who wrote about this movie who knows who Monster Clown and Chessman are.
For Bandcamp, I wrote up a guide to Texas country, the sound of my childhood.
Also at Pitchfork, I wrote about Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla and the inherent challenges of tackling such a branded figure.
Making my debut at The Nation with a review of the recent Vince McMahon biography Ringmaster, which is an extremely frustrating and misguided book. Very glad I got to speak my piece about this.
I wrote about women’s wrestling for Dua Lip’s feminist newsletter??? It’s all worth it if I can get Dua Lipa to fuck with some Bull Nakano matches…
I’m sure there are some other things I’m forgetting… There’s always something. More coming down the pipeline as well even as the year starts to wrap up.
Just a reminder - I’m pretty much always available for press bios, copywriting, or other freelance publicity consulting services, and I’m especially free as the year starts to wind down. Feel free to get in touch should you need someone to wrangle words for any purpose :)
thanks for your reading and support as wells!! especially thank you to my paid contributors. i promise i will send you another special little post soon!
